Stonewall Cottage- Historic renovation- Jamestown RI

Stonewall Cottage was built as a summer camp on the shore of Narraganset Bay in 1873.  Over a century later, only 3 rooms in the house were winterized.

Our renovation moved the house to a new, zoning-compliant foundation, reframed walls, floors, roofs and porches to meet structural and energy codes, and added a attached barn for parking and second floor living space.

Most of the original first floor became an open plan living area open to the wraparound porch overlooking the bay.  A new formal living room with coffered ceiling, fireplace, built-in bookcases and its own view of the bay was added at the back of the first floor.

Upstairs, five bedrooms are nestled under the low eaves of the roof.  The original mansard-roofed observation tower can be reached by a ship’s ladder in the master suite dressing room.

Nearly all of the original exterior details were preserved, and reproduced at the additions. The original low porch railing was replaced with a taller, code compliant rail for safety.
